Meeting some of the family

At two weeks of life, Samuel has had lots of company come to meet him. Lil' Dennis was very excited the second time around and wanted to hold him. He was so sweet with Sammy, very gentle and curious with him. When his turn to hold the baby was all done, he kept walking around behind Holly saying "Mine!" because he wanted to have Sammy back. It was to funny! I think he is going to be a great big brother. Dad arrived on Sunday, and spent a few days getting to know Sam too. He couldn't get over what a peanut Sammy is... even though he was the exact same size Tristan was at birth. Dad even did a little babysitting while treating Mom and I to a pedicure. Sammy was very well behaved and spent the majority of the time in his swing.
Tristan and Sammy chilling out before dinner.
Our two week family photo, yes we survived it. In fact, I think we are really getting into the swing of things.
All pooped out after a long day! He is so precious when he sleeps. We found Cody's baby book, with his hospital photo, and there is no contest, Sammy looks just like Cody except a little bit smaller and not quite as full in the face. It is uncanning!

Life at week 2

Needless to say, it is a lot harder to blog with an infant! As is I'm typing with one hand and soothing my boy with a pacifier. All in a days work, and to think I was going to ban the precious binkie from Sammy's mouth. HA! What was I thinking?

Sammy's first bath - he isn't a big fan of the sponge bath. No real baths until that icky umbiblical cord falls off however. He has successfully found his thumb, another reason we are big fans of the binkie.
Getting ready for bed - the only pjs that fit him is the froggy gown handed down from Jake, another pee-wee baby.
A bit of "tummy time"! Sleepy milk coma
We are doing great! Sam had his one week check up, and has gained all of his weight back. He is eating well and sleeping well. Last night, he slept from 12:00 to 6:30, giving both Cody and I a bit of a heart attack. He had an outbreak of that horrible baby acne for a few days, but that has all but cleared up. Thank goodness! It was breaking my heart, acne on a fair haired, white boy baby was not so cute.

It's A Boy! Sweet Sammy has finally arrived!

Born on Tuesday, July 10th at 12:16 am

Samuel Cody Fielden was 6 pounds 1 ounce, 19 inches long and absolutely the most beautiful baby boy! He has a strawberry blonde hair, and so far dark blue eyes. His skin is very creamy and a little sensitive. He already loves to be swaddled as tight as Daddy can make it, suck on his fists, suck on his binkie, his milk time and cuddled, cuddled, cuddled!!!

The labor and delivery was not natural as planned, after about 16 hours of hard labor and several big scares with a decealerating heart rate, Sammy made the choice for us. He was not coming out, it was just not safe for him and he knew it. The cord was wrapped around his body and whenever I moved positions he went into distress and after the third attempt to move he did not recover. I was rushed to the OR at 11:30pm for an emergency C-section. Very scary business! I was not responding to the epidural quick enough, and the surgical team decided to put me under. Sammy was born a few minutes later. I would like to say he came into the world screaming, but unfortunately, he did not. The cord has cut off his air and he was non responsive for a few minutes. My baby boy was as blue as a blueberry, he scored a one on his APGAR. He quickly recovered and was out of critical care by morning. His peditrician says he is perfect and in the clear, we are blessed with an incredible healthy fiesty baby boy.

40 weeks, overDUE

The child does not want to come out.Cody made me put the hat on, silliness is always good when you are a little disappointed I suppose.
I went in for my 40 week check-up and to my dismay, still no action. The baby has still not descended and as Dr. O'Keefe put it "you have a lot of work ahead of you this week". He checked for amniotic fluid leaks and dialation, everything is sealed up like Fort Knoxx. They also hooked me up to a fetal heart rate monitor, and had me sit for a non-stress test. This looks for the baby's heart rate, uterine contractions and fetal movement. Everything looks great, the baby is definitely not stressed... in fact, I am pretty sure s/he is very comfortable. The heart rate was pretty stable at around 140, but would skip around to as high as 170 during a contraction (which were mild, at best).
The doctor is having me come in again this Friday afternoon, to check my progress and the official eviction notice is being served Sunday night, July 8th. If I do not go into labor on my own, they will bring me in to start the process of induction. They will start me on a medicine that will thin my cervix called, Cervidil. That following morning, if no contractions occur, they then will start Pitocin. Pitocin will bring on the contractions artificially. It is much more painful than natural contractions, and can sometimes lead to other medical interventions. I can't say that I am thrilled about all this "induction" business... but after a certain point, my womb is no longer the best place for the baby to be. There are risks associated with both allowing the baby to go over and starting the induction. I know that I have the option of continuing to hold out for natural labor to occur, but honestly people, I can't sleep, my back and rib cage are KILLING me, headaches, nausea, yada-yada-yada... all your typical pregnant lady complaints, I am starting to get a little grumpy. It has been our plan to have a natural birth from the beginning, and I must say that I am a little disappointed that it may not go that route. What can one do? Here's to hoping the little one gets motivated on its own.
My mom is here, thank god, to get me thru this last week. She will be a blessing to help get the nest ready and just keep my mind off of this whole thing.
